High School and College were difficult times both emotionally and financially. Nancy found a positive outlet in high school; writing and editing for her school newspaper and the yearbook. Her high school journalism classes were the catalyst for her interest in news, and reporting. She attended college at Pennsylvania State University because her mother's job with the University made tuition affordable. She muddled through, and claims she was lucky to actually graduate.

After college, Nancy moved to Philadelphia where she restlessly pursued several career paths. Finally in 1979, she landed what she terms her first “real job” as a television reporter in Charleston, West Virginia . She was assigned to cover the political beat, which included the West Virginia Legislature and the second term of then Governor Jay Rockefeller.

In 1984 she landed her second “real job” working for Senator Robert C. Byrd. It was from Senator Byrd and his dedicated staff that she learned how good government is meant to operate. Senator Byrd's career has been historic, and distinguished by a moral compass that is always consistent and never waivers. For Nancy, it was a remarkable experience which formed her opinions about public service.

In 1993, Nancy 's mother was diagnosed with cancer. She left Senator Byrd's staff and returned to Philadelphia to help her sisters with care giving. This was the year she worked for the U.S. Forest Service. After her mother passed away, she resigned her position and returned to West Virginia where she worked for the Arnold Agency and her good friend Linda Arnold. In 1996 she opened her own communications firm, Capitol City Communications, which she still owns and operates today.
